Supreme Court Issues Notice On Another Petition Filed By Teesta Setalvad's NGO CJP Challenging Anti-Conversion Laws Of 5 More States

On January 22, 2021, the Supreme Court issued a notice on a second petition filed by NGO Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), led by activist Teesta Setalvad, against the anti-conversion laws of five more states- Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand.  The NGO had sought scrapping of the anti-conversion laws in these states claiming that they violate fundamental rights guaranteed by Articles 14 and 25 of the Indian Constitution. In the petition, CJP stated that the anti-conversion laws are primarily used to target minority communities. They argued that these laws discriminate on the basis of religion and restrict one’s freedom of choice. The petition further stated that the anti-conversion laws load the burden of proof on the accused and demanded that these laws be declared unconstitutional in order to protect the lives and personal liberties of individuals. OCI Rights: Supreme Court Urges 'Higher Echelons' To Examine 2021 MHA Notification Considering Impact On Indian Diaspora

  The Supreme Court of India has called on “higher echelons” – the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Cabinet of Ministers – to review the 2021 MHA Notification and consider its impact on the Indian diaspora. The notification allowed for the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders to be granted the same rights and privileges enjoyed by Indian citizens across various fields such as career opportunities, education, medical, and self-employment. The court argued that it was important for the government to consider the implications of the notification for members of the Indian diaspora, noting that OCI cardholders wouldn’t be in a position to take advantage of the full range of opportunities available to citizens of India. CJI & Supreme Court Judges Visit Amrit Udyan Of Rashtrapati Bhavan On Invitation Of President

  On September 8, 2020, Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde and several other Supreme Court judges and their families visited the Amrit Udyan of Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, on an invitation of the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.  The Chief Justice and the other judges were accompanied on the occasion by the President and first lady Savita Kovind. The visit was part of the Rashtrapati Bhavan’s Samhita initiative. As part of Samhita, the President invites eminent guests to the gardens of the palace to share conversations focussing on literature, art, music, culture, science and Spirituality.
